Why Canadians Love the Idea of a Second Home (or a Move) to London, England
By Samantha Graff Benmor
Over the years, I’ve noticed a growing trend among Canadians: more and more are drawn to the idea of owning a second home, or even relocating, to London, England. While New York often comes to mind first for international city living, there’s something about London that continues to captivate!
The Pull of London
London is a city that blends history, culture, and modern conveniences like no other. For Canadians, the appeal is multilayered:
- Language & Familiarity: No language barrier makes the transition smoother than other European destinations.
- Education & Opportunities: World-class schools, universities, and professional opportunities make it appealing for families and professionals alike.
- Connectivity: London is a gateway city, with easy access to Europe, Africa, and beyond. Perfect for those who want both global adventure and urban sophistication.
- Lifestyle: From charming neighbourhoods filled with markets and green parks to Michelin-starred restaurants and West End theatre, life in London offers a balance of culture, community, and cosmopolitan energy.
A Funny Florida Story
Just recently, while attending my husband’s high school reunion in Florida, I ended up chatting with a couple who could not stop raving about London. They told me without hesitation that if given the choice between New York and London, they would choose London every time. For them, London wasn’t just a favourite travel destination; it was their dream spot for a second home and possibly a future relocation. That sentiment mirrors what I’ve heard from many of our clients in Toronto over the years.
My Own London Highlights
My most recent time in London was truly special, especially my days wandering through Notting Hill. The charm of its streets and boutiques stayed with me, I can’t wait to wear my new blazer from the cutest authentic London shop! And of course, London wouldn’t be London without the dining and cultural experiences:
- Scott’s in Mayfair: A London classic. (See my full review! https://thegraffgroup.ca/an-elegant-london-evening-cocktails-at-34-dinner-at-scotts-mayfair/)
- NOPI by Ottolenghi: One of my favourite Israeli chefs, review coming soon.
- The American Bar at The Savoy Hotel: Ranked among the 100 best bars in the world, and the hotel itself is a fantastic place to stay.
- Borough Market: The famous food market that’s a must for anyone who loves authentic bites and local flavours.
- The National Theatre: For world-class performances and the perfect London evening.
- The Book of Mormon: A must-see if it’s still playing; one of the funniest, sharpest productions you’ll ever watch.
A few photos from our trip soon to bring these moments to life!
The Commonwealth Advantage
For Canadians, there’s also an added layer of comfort in choosing London. As part of the Commonwealth, Canada and the UK share historic, legal, and cultural ties that make everything feel more familiar! From governance and banking to healthcare agreements and even small everyday details. This connection often eases the transition for Canadians who might otherwise feel overwhelmed by a move abroad.
Why Now?
- Global Positioning: With shifting markets and currency fluctuations, Canadians sometimes find it strategically advantageous to invest in a London property.
- Cultural Connection: Many Canadians have family ties or cultural affinity with the UK, making London feel less like a leap and more like an extension of home.
- Diversification: For those looking at real estate as part of a larger wealth-building or lifestyle plan, owning in London provides both diversification and prestige.
The Bottom Line
Whether it’s the allure of cobblestone streets in Notting Hill, a flat overlooking Hyde Park, or the buzz of Canary Wharf, London offers something uniquely compelling for Canadians. It’s not just about bricks and mortar, it’s about creating a lifestyle that feels both adventurous and grounded.
So, while Florida sunshine will always hold its charm and New York will remain a magnet for energy, it’s London that often captures the hearts of Canadians looking for that “next chapter” home.
