Are We Waiting Too Long to Support Couples Before Selling the Matrimonial Home?

Are We Waiting Too Long to Support Couples Before Selling the Matrimonial Home?

In real estate, we are often brought in at pivotal life moments.

But when it comes to the sale of the matrimonial home, I’ve been reflecting on something more deeply.

Are we arriving too late in the process?

I recently had a call with a woman at the very beginning stages of a separation. She was thoughtful, open, and trying to understand her options. My role was to help assess the value of her home and explore whether a buyout might be possible.

During our conversation, I asked her if she had ever worked with a divorce coach.

She hadn’t even heard of one.

That moment stayed with me.

Because by the time many professionals enter the conversation whether it is realtors, lawyers, or financial advisors so much has already happened. Emotions have escalated. Communication has broken down. Positions have been taken.

And often, decisions are being made under pressure rather than clarity.

At the same time, we are seeing more open conversations around midlife health, stress, hormones, perimenopause, and menopause.

You have likely seen the advertisements for supplements, exercise programs, teas, and wellness solutions. All focused on helping people feel better physically.

And while those conversations are important, I believe there is another layer that deserves more attention.

We are not talking enough about how major life transitions combined with stress, emotional overload, and physical and hormonal changes can quietly affect relationships, communication, emotional resilience, and the way couples navigate difficult periods together.

Especially when major life decisions are involved, such as selling a home or questioning a marriage.

This is not about assigning blame.

It is about awareness.

Because when people better understand what they are experiencing emotionally, physically, and mentally, it can change the way they communicate, support one another, and make decisions during already stressful periods of life.

Steve and I are aligned with a network of professionals including divorce coaches, therapists, legal experts and health practitioners who help people feel heard, informed, supported, and better equipped to navigate these transitions.

Not only in navigating separation…

But, in some cases, in helping couples reconnect before reaching that point.

Or at the very least, in allowing families to move through difficult transitions with more clarity, less conflict, and healthier outcomes.

From my perspective, the home often becomes the focal point of the negotiation.

But the real story is always about the people.

And perhaps the sale of the matrimonial home does not always have to be the result of a breakdown.

Perhaps, in some cases, it can represent a different life stage.

A move forward together. A reset. A thoughtful downsizing aligned with where life is now.

If we can begin to support people earlier and more holistically, we may be able to shift not only outcomes, but experiences.

Steve and I would love to bring together a group of professionals including lawyers, divorce coaches, therapists, and health experts to explore this conversation more deeply.

If this resonates with you, please engage with this article or reach out. We will be organizing a webinar and would be happy to share the details once scheduled. I also have an in person event happening soon with a few spots left.

Because perhaps the question is not just how we navigate separation…

But whether, in some cases, we can support people sooner, and differently, before they get there.
