There are things we see in the course of selling a matrimonial home that have very little to do with real estate.
After years of working with separating and divorcing couples including highly complex and high-conflict situations, Cheryl and I have learned how important it is to understand what may be happening behind the scenes.
Intimate partner violence does not always present itself physically. Coercive control, financial control, intimidation and isolation can all play a role in a relationship and can continue to affect how someone communicates, makes decisions and navigates the sale of the family home during separation.
As Realtors, we are not lawyers, therapists or divorce coaches. But we are part of the professional team surrounding our clients during what can be an incredibly vulnerable transition.
That means education matters.
It means knowing when something is beyond our scope.
It means understanding why patience, neutrality, clear communication and the right professional referrals can be so important.
And it means approaching people with compassion rather than judgment.
This is one of the reasons The Graff Group is so proud to sponsor the Divorce Coaches Association of Ontario’s Night of Film & Dialogue on Intimate Partner Violence on September 28th. Buy your tickets here

Conversations like these create awareness. Awareness creates understanding. And understanding can change the way we support people moving through separation and divorce.
Because for us, it has always been about far more than selling the matrimonial home.
It’s about helping families move forward.
